Xibin HanDr. Han is the Associate Research Fellow and Associate Dean of College of Educational Research at Tsinghua University. His research focuses on theory, methodology, and technology speaking to online education, blended pedagogy, and digitized learning environment. He spent 17 years in developing the Tsinghua Education Online (THEOL) which has been widely used in more than 400 institutions in China. Dr. Han is a specialist in the blended teaching program of UNESCO and his contribution has significantly pushed the reform of blended teaching in Chinese higher education institutions forward.

With the topic of Teaching, Research, and Progress in Implementation of Blended Learning, Dr. Han addressed the current status of blended learning based on the 18 years of research and practice of Tsinghua University’s Institute of Educational Technology. He proposed that higher education and professional development for teachers ought to focus on pedagogical innovations with various formats of blended learning, integration of newer models of teaching with information technology, ensuring teaching quality and branding, and developing talents with well-rounded competency.  At this forum, Dr. Han also reported the trends of blended learning both domestically and internationally, proposed the visions on research directions for blended learning, and shared several significant cases in China higher education.

Dr. Li Yuan, Senior Research Fellow at University of Bolton and Learning Technology Advisor at Cetis (Centre for Educational Technology, Interoperability and Standards). She has been involved in the British and European innovative technology research project. She is a member of EU-funded educational technology research and development program, like “TEL-Map”, “LACE” and “RAGE”, and leads the design and implementation of open education resources (OER), online education and educational technology innovation program in multiple British higher education institutions. Her reports, MOOCs and Open Education: implications for higher education and Beyond MOOCs: Sustainable Online Learning in Institutions, provide significant implications for higher education stakeholders and policy-makers in Britain concerning the latest development of MOOCs and open online learning.

Dr. Yuan will address the influence and impact of open online learning, featuring MOOCs, on traditional higher education institutions. Also, based on the blended teaching practices collaboratively administrated by Chinese and British higher education institutions, she will guide us in an explorative tour of theoretical framework, technical support, and pedagogical innovations about open online learning in higher education.

Dr. Xiaojun Chen From St. John’s University Visited Beijing Normal University

Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Future Education of Beijing Normal University invited Dr. Xiaojun Chen, Assistant Professor of Educational Technology from School of Education, St. John’s University for an academic visit.

On January 7th, 2016, Dr. Xiaojun Chen delivered a two-hour seminar titled “Common Core and Technology: Research of Educational Technology Promoting Students’ Deep Learning”. The session was hosted by Professor Li Chen, the vice president of Beijing Normal University and the executive deputy director of Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Future Education. Deputy Director of The Faulty of Education, Executive Deputy Director of the Advanced Innovation Center for Future Education Dr. Shengquan Yu, Professor Wenge Guo from Peking University, faculty members and students from Beijing Normal University attended the seminar.

Dr. Chen’s talk began with the information on the Common Core State Standards in the United States, with its focus on English Language Arts and mathematics. The establishment of the Common Core State Standards suggested that the K-12 education in the United States is moving in the direction of a unified national education. Dr. Chen shared her research on aligning the common core standards in classroom teaching practices and the expectations of students regarding technology integration and adaptation. Dr. Chen concluded her talk on new opportunities and challenges in the process of common core’s technology integration.

November 30, 2015, Professor Li Chen, Vice President of Beijing Normal University was interviewed in CCTV-1 “Focus Interview”. The CCTV-1 “Focus Interview” is a well-received news program providing in-depth news reports and policy monitoring on national merging issues. This program receives high attention by the party, national leaders, and all sectors of the public audience.

In this interview with Professor Li Chen, it highlighted the importance to the construction of world-class universities and first-class disciplines as directed by the Central Party Committee (CPC). Under the guidance of the eighteen committee of CPC, a deepening reform, innovation-driven development as the strategic guidelines were introduced. To maintain a strong and stable creativity growth, personnel training and reserves is necessary. The role of education can not be ignored. To improve education and conduct cutting-edge research, the establishment of world-class universities and world-class disciplines is essential. This is a major decision of the Central Committee and State Council.

Vice President Li Chen pointed out that, in order to create world-class universities and class disciplines, seeking answers to questions regarding to specific aspects and emphasis on education reform will help clarifying the future development in education reform. Professor Li Chen also pointed out that reforms of internal administration of higher education systems is as important as reforms of external environment. The reform also involves attracting and cultivating students of high standards, and at the same time, stimulating social development while persists in the framework of university president leader under committee secretary. These guidelines are very clear and specific.
